Sacred Tradition is the living transmission of the Word of God entrusted by Christ and the Holy Spirit to the apostles and handed on to their successors (CCC 83, 97). Before the New Testament was written, the faith was preached, celebrated, and lived in the life of the early Church. This apostolic Tradition preserves, expounds, and spreads the fullness of divine Revelation under the guidance of the Spirit of truth (CCC 81–82). It must be distinguished from the various theological, liturgical, or devotional traditions that develop over time; these expressions may change, but the apostolic Tradition itself remains the Church’s enduring and living memory of Christ (CCC 83).
